Without a doubt the star par excellence among the monuments in Roses is the citadel. It is a fortress that houses an archaeological site of 12 hectares. In the complex you can explore the remains of the ancient Greek colony of Rhodes, the Roman ruins, the medieval village and the imposing fortress. Northwest of the current town of Roses, the fortress dominated the bay of Roses.
In XI century was built first a wall around the Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria de Rhodes. In the XVI century during the reign of Carles I, the citadel was definitely expanded as a fortifications. This new military fort, with pentagonal bastions and walls, was developed to address the destructive power of the land and naval artillery of the time. This new military fortress had absolute power over the lands and over the sea.
Roses always had to be on guard against enemies, because the town had a port of very high strategic and commercial value.
Within the fort, visitors find a very valuable archaeological from different centuries who have been immortalized in the course of time there: Among other things, you will find an ancient Greek settlement of Rhode (IV-III century BC), a Roman settlement and a medieval city which was built around the monastery of Santa Maria.
The ruins of the monastery and the citadel were declared as a conservation area on 22 February 1961. 401/1961, del 22 de Februar de 1961 (BOE 8-3-61), R-I-53-0029.
Today the citadel is available to the public and they are offering daily guided tours.
