Visit Sant Quirze de Colera

This Friday you have the opportunity to participate on a night tour of Sant Quirze de Colera monastery. Between 9 and 11, the guided tours are available every 15 minutes. This theatrical tour lasts about an hour with a price of € 6 per person. (With dinner € 26). Do not miss the visit of this unique building from the X century. This monument is located in the municipality of Rabós, 35 km away from Roses. Come and visit the unique monument which offered our region Empordà.

The architectural ensemble of Sant Quirze de Colera

The small Benedictine abbey St. Quirze is situated at the backdrop mountain, amidst in the nature reserve of Albera. The small monastery from the Carolingian period is the Holy St.Quirze, St. Andreu and St. Benet ordained and was founded towards the end of the 8th century; 935 the Basilica was inaugurated, whose early members are still visible today.

St. Quirze de Colera is a member of Rabos d’Emporda. From there are a wider path “6 km” far to St. Quirze, which is either accessible on foot or by car.

The Corall of St. Quirze Restaurant invites you to rest. The restaurant fits like an old stone farmhouse set in the ambience of the monastery and is open every day except Wednesday.

Characteristic of this construction is the layering of the stones in the form of herringbone. The three apses, which are attached in a line to the transept, date from the 11th century, as the vaults and arches in its interior. From the former convent next to the church is still the North gallery with two original openings available in simple rustic style. In the northeastern part of yard still exist some remains from the 9th and early 10th century. The annex to the west consists of many styles from X.-XIX. Century.

The convent was in the following years more and more power and limitations of the monastery district were extended. 1123 was the dedication of the altar of the small church Sta. Maria instead, which was located in front of the monastery. 1285 camped the occupation army of the French king in the monastery and in 1288 it was plundered by troops of King Jaime de Mallorca. After the monastery was raised to a fortress, it could be for some time to receive and then continue to lose influence. Mid-15th century, ending the era of the Benedictine monastery. The building has been restored and will be made available shortly to the public.

In this first half of September the convent will be open daily (except Wednesday) from november 9 to 13h and on weekends and holidays from 11 to 14.00h.
