The Trinitat Castle is one of the most important fortresses, which was built in Catalonia. This fact and the unique situation make this monument as spectacular. From the fortress, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Golf of Roses.

The Castle Trinitat, which dates back to 1544 (s. XVI), was built under the reign of Charles I and is now a national treasure. The castle is located south of the Bay of Roses, on top of Mount Poncella. At the east of the city and 60 meters above sea level, the castle reigns today on Roses.

The castle oversaw and defended the bay and the entrance to the port of Roses. The fortification replaced a medieval tower, which probably at this time had the same function.

The castle is one of the first examples of a constructed coastal artillery fort, along with Ciutadella. The innovative project of the XVI century, was designed by the engineer Luis Pizano.

The castle has an irregular star-shaped system with four angular edges to protect against enemy projectiles. The edge of Roses (west) the edge of the Trinidad (east), the edge of Medes (south) and the edge of Sant Pere de Rodes (north). The fifth point was added as Revellín to defend the gate to the castle.

Originally the castle was divided into three floors: The terraces were used for the batteries of cannons, the 2 floor was the accommodation for howitzers and mortars, with a capacity of 350 people and the lowest level was used as a storage area for food and ammo. The walls of 2 meters thick held numerous sieges.

Today the castle is an integral part of the cultural heritage of Roses. In 1990 the castle was handed over at the municipality of Roses. After years of restoration and renovation work, the monument was finally open to the public at 2011.
